Cranfield University is one of Europe's largest academic centres for strategic and applied research, development and design. It has many global networks, and is unique in its almost entirely postgraduate focus, having over 3 000 students. It aims to be a leading national, European and international institution for the generation, dissemination and application of knowledge in engineering, applied science, manufacturing, management and medical science. Since its foundation in 1946, CU has been involved in all aspects of aeronautical research and has operated its own laboratory aircraft. Cranfield Airport is a busy general aviation airport situated in class G airspace and is wholly owned by CU. The research has extended beyond engineering and into aircraft operations and the man-machine interface.
Through such research, CU has developed strong interests in aviation safety, human factors, flight control, airworthiness, risk and reliability. The University carries out extensive research, design and test work for industry and the Ministry of Defence and is involved in several EU and national projects.
CU will be responsible for tasks within WP1, and play a supporting role in the other work packages.
