Fraunhofer ICT

Fraunhofer is Europe's largest organisation for applied research based on contracts employing some 13 000 staff. It is market driven and we earn 2/3 of our budget of 1.2 billion Euros by industry and public authorities. 1/3 is a public support of the German Ministry for research and technology. Headquartered in Munich Fraunhofer had been founded in 1949 and operates currently 58 institutes. Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) is one of the largest institutes (400 staff and some € 26 Mio budget) aiming on contract research in the fields of polymer engineering, environmental engineering and explosive technology.

Projects successfully run in the aeronautics sector include FIREDETEX - Fire Detection and Extinguishing within the first call of the Specific Programme "Competitive and Sustainable Growth" of the fifth EU-framework (partners: EADS Airbus GmbH (D) (Coordinator), EADS Airbus SA (F), Civil Aviation Authority (UK), AOA Apparatebau Gauting GmbH (D), University of Giessen (D), Siemens Cerberus SA (F), Aliachem AS (CZ), Kidde Graviner Ltd. (UK), Latécoère SA (F), MAN Technologie AG (D), National Technical University of Athens (GR), Air Liquide (F)).

Fraunhofer is the only research establishment which, besides Agusta Westland, Airbus, Alenia Aeronautica, Dassault Aviation, EADS-CASA, Eurocopter, Liebherr-Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, Saab, ABB, Safran and Thales, is a member of the Executive Board of the Joint Technology Initiative "Clean Sky" within the Seventh Framework Program. The JTI Clean Sky is an innovative, large programme that will radically improve the impact of Air Transport on the environment while strengthening and securing European aeronautics industry's competitiveness. Its purpose is to demonstrate and validate the technological breakthroughs that are necessary to reach the environmental goals set by the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE: the European Technology Platform for Aeronautics & Air Transport).

Fraunhofer will be responsible for coordinating the activities within WP 2, task leader for WP3 and will play a supporting role in the other work packages.
